Jane Loevinger's Stages of Ego Development

Jane Loevinger (nee Weissman) was a developmental psychologist. Her stages of ego development are a theory of personality which was primarily based on Erikson's psychosocial development model. Unlike Freud, she proposed that the ego is a process which is utilised as a lens or perspective from which to create meaning and interpret the reality that one experiences, so as to make sense of the world. From childhood, the ego learns to control impulse and develop character through interpersonal relations, essential cognitive abilities that develop over time.
