Low self-esteem is the cause of many social and individual problems. When someone does not feel good about her/himself, that person can easily adopt negative stereotypes about others. For example, a 43 year old man who was betrayed by his mother when he was a little boy by allowing men to beat and sexually abuse him grows up with low self-esteem, anger management problems, trust issues, and hatred for "good for nothing" women (as the women who was supposed to love and protect him did not). Because he feels that women are "trash", he belittles them and abuses them because of the negative stereotypes he has for women. This may seem like an extreme case, but it is not.
