IO & Productivity

The goal of industrial/organizational (IO) psychology is to improve productivity and conditions in the workplace by utilizing psychological methods and principles to find solutions and innovations for the workplace. A common concern in IO is those set of problems that deal with human performance. There are a host of areas wherein IO is applicable. For IO specialists, the bottomline in any organization is performance (SIOP, 2012). Improved performance means utilizing strategies and methods that focus on the development and well-being of the members of the organization. By looking at behaviors and attitudes that can be enhanced by training programs, for example, performance can improve, benefiting the organization and the employee. Here, we will discuss productive and unproductive behaviors to assess strategies that can be used to ameliorate performance and correct behaviors that lead to wastage and failure.

Productive Behavior

What is productive behavior? Simply put, it is those sets of attitudes and behaviors an employee has that have a positive contribution to the goals of the company. While the employee, when new, might have the skills or the initial qualification and 'potential' for the job, this does not yet ensure a 'correct fit'. Each organization has their own unique workplace culture; a way of doing things. By means of training and of familiarization, the new hire can 'attune' themselves to the most productive means of working in relation to the culture, which pushes productivity. This, at least, is the 'social element' of productivity; referring to a conflict-free and achievement focused organization.
