The dark adaptation phenomena can be illustrated by when someone transitions from an extremely bright or well-lit area to a relatively dark area. A classic example happens when you get an eye exam, and the doctor has to dilate your eyes; thus, the room goes from well-lit to quite dark, and then the doctor shines a bright light into your eyes, often making it very uncomfortable and scary. This transition or adjustment time before your eyes can see detailed objects reflects the dark adaptation phenomena.
