There are pathways that conduct information from the primary visual cortex through various specialized areas of the cortex primarily through two streams: the dorsal and ventral streams. The dorsal stream is made up of visual pathways that flow from the primary visual cortex (the area of the cortex that involves direct input from the striate cortex [structure of basal ganglia]). The dorsal (surface of the vertebrae located at the top of the head) stream flows from the primary visual cortex to the posterior parietal cortex [PPC] (the area of association cortex that receives input from visual, auditory, and somatosensory system). The PPC is involved in the perception of spatial location and voluntary behavior (Pinel, 2006, p. 161).
