Validity of information is an important consideration in criminal profiling. Validity according to Kimberlen and Winterstein (2008), "Validity is often defined as the extent to which an instrument measures what it purports to measure. Validity requires that an instrument is reliable..." In criminal profiling and forensic psychology therefore, the question of validity asks if the information on which the profile is based on really quantifies, represents and is a true description or measure of the subject being profiled. The reason behind this is simple. Goodwin (2002) explains that, "profiling as investigative tool today is entirely intuitive based and represents a less than educated attempt to provide law enforcement agencies with detailed information about the behavior of an unknown individual who has committed a crime."
