In proposing his personality model Eysenck that all traits derive from three biological (i.e., temperament) systems. The basic assumption was that factor analyses should not be used alone for establishing personality dimensions. The first dimension, according to Eysenck is extroversion (assertiveness) the second is neuroticism (emotional instability) and the third factor psychoticism (impulsivity). However, the initial model proposed by Eysenck (1947 as cited in Van Kampen, 1993) was concerned with neurotic and psychotic disturbances. As Van Kampen notes, Eysenck regarded psychotic disturbances as a continuum that goes from perfectly normal to rational to completely insane.
Therefore, in his later model, the Extroversion Factor, the third orthogonal (non-correlated) dimension was introduced as a type factor that was meant to distinguish between different types of neurosis and psychosis For example, a person with a high psychotic disturbance with low extroversion was thought to be typical of schizophrenics, and a high psychotic disturbance with high extroversion was considered with affective psychoses.
