1) The figure shows four situations in which five charged particles are evenly spaced along on an axis. The charge values are given except for the central particle, which has the same charge in all 4 situations. Rank the situations according to the magnitude of the net electrostatic force on the central particle, greatest first.

As said there are 4 situations. or 4 horizontal lines. Line or situation 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each horizontal line has 5 evenly spaced dots or particles on it.

LINE 1 charges are from left to right -e, -e, dot without charge, +e, -e.
LINE 2 charges are from left to right +e, +e, dot without charge, +e, -e.
LINE 3 charges are from left to right -e, -e, dot without charge, +e, +e.
LINE 4 charges are from left to right -e, +e, dot without charge, +e, -e.

2) In this figure a central pair of charge -2q is surrounded by a square array of charged particles, separated by either distance d or d/2 along the perimeter of the square. What are the magnitude and direction of the net electrostatic force on the central particle due to the other particles? (Hint: Symmetry can reduce the amount of work)

FIGURE DESCRIPTION:

As said, the picture shows a square. The top horizontal line at the left most corner is a dot of charge +2q, then in the middle of the top line -7q and at the right top corner +4q

The bottom horizontal line in the bottom left corner is +4q, in the middle is -7q and at the bottom right corner is +2q.

The left verticle line of the box as said for the top left corner is again +2q, going down is then -5q, then +3q, then -3q, and the bottom left corner again +4q all evenly spaced.

The right vertical line of the box in the top right corner is again +4q, then -3q, the third charge going down is missing, then -5q and the right bottom corner is again +2q. In the center fo the whole entire box if -2q.
