Please help me figure out how this method works. In problem 1 , the 1* 25 has a check next to it. the 2*50 has a line drawn through it . The 4 100(4*25) has a check next to it and the 8 200 (8* 25 ) has a check next to it. Please explain why the checks are next to the numbers and why the one has a line drawn through it.

In problem number 2, 1 17 has a line drawn through it. 2 next to 34 has a check next to it . 4 next to 68 ha a line drawn through it. 8 next to 136 has a line drawn through it .And, 16 next to 272 has a check next to it. I'm sure there is some mathematical reasoning or solution why the checks and line drawn through them .
