Prototyping
The article that stood out most for me was an article entitled "Paper Prototyping," that I found at a website called A List Apart. This fascinating article was written by Shawn Medero in 2007 and has been published in three publications, Layout and Grids, Information Architecture and Interaction Design (Medero, 2007). The article favors web design, but the concepts presented within the article lend credibility to usage across a broad spectrum.
Pleasant Surprise
One of the most surprising aspects of this article was the flexibility that can be achieved by prototyping with paper. Paper is inexpensive, versatile and user friendly. While interfaces are increasingly more complex, paper can present HTML and CSS concepts in an accurate and understandable fashion (Medero, 2007).
Why the Surprise
The fact is, some people shy away from using paper because of its simplicity; however its simplicity can lighten the mood of an overly complex project and bring a great deal of perspective to implementation of new ideas (Medero, 2007). I would have thought that using a paper model for anything would be off-putting; but to the contrary, it can be very well received. In addition to simplicity in design, it is easy on the budget. Many companies spend thousands on prototyping software, but paper prototyping is easy on the budget. While there is no substitute for prototyping software as it relates to testing interactivity, the budget can be reduced in the early stages of development by using the paper concept before hand.
Conclusion (The Purpose for Prototyping)
There are many reasons to prototype a concept before the actual production starts. Prototyping ultimately is a methodology; a methodology that is put into steps before the real product goes into production. According to this article, paper makes these steps easier to understand from a visual standpoint (Medero, 2007). Prototyping allows designers to both organize and conceptualize the end product. In addition, by using paper, the design process is more flexible in relationship to time, money and effort.
