1. Why do you think some neighborhoods are more conducive to crime than others? How does anomie play a role in the increased crime rates?

People tend to do what is expected of them. If one is living in a good neighborhood and has good influences then he or she will mimic the behavior that is expected of them. Others will also encourage the individual to act in the way that they, too, act. If the neighborhood in which the person lives has a sense of lawlessness about it, then individuals will be more likely to commit crimes just as their neighbors do. The broken window theory also comes to mind when thinking of crime prone neighborhoods. The theory states that if a neighborhood looks unsavory, then criminal acts will more than likely occur within that neighborhood. If buildings are not maintained within the neighborhood and vandalism shows, then it encourages more vandalism and harsher crimes. Well, these are the general theories when it comes to the strain and anomie theories. However, I do not personally believe that all "run down" neighborhoods have more crime than affluent ones. It may be uneasy to drive through an unwelcoming looking neighborhood, but it does not mean that the crime is more; the crime is just different. While disagreeable places may seem to have more murder, violence, burglaries, and robberies than more prosperous ones, wealthier areas will more likely have ...
