I don't believe the United States will ever have a national health care system.

However, we've had a universal health care system since 1986 with the passing of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. Many constituents have proposed a healthcare system similar to those in Europe. These bills have been proposed as a Universal Healthcare System. There are numerous road blocks to these lobbyists and often the opposition has more money to fight an implemented system.
