Solution Summary

The physical impact on the colonists was fear of the Indians. This was caused initially by a combination of things; both Jamestown, Virginia and (1607) and Plymouth, Massachusetts (1620) were founded in Indian Empires, the Jamestown colony in the Algonquin Empire and Plymouth in the Wompanoag empire. The Algonquin and Wompanoag had both been attacked by the first exploratory ships ( the landing parties fired at them and even killed some) which had surveyed the land. Additionally, both tribes had been hit by small pox which was brought about by the settlers. However, once the colonists befriended the Indians the colonists quickly usurped the land of the Indians. It was such a problem that in 1763 the British had to institute the "proclamation line" which separated white settlers from Indian lands and prevented expansion.
