It is pretty obvious that whatever was on that tape during the 18 minutes was vital to the case against President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. It was speculated more than once that the information in this section was the truth to the entire scandal, and this was the reason why Nixon erased it (or had it erased). He even allowed his secretary to take the blame for it by citing a clerical error while transcribing the tape. As well, he later provided "edited" versions of the transcripts for the public (which further kept the truth from them because he only released what he wanted the public to know).
