Throughout her years of service to the Israeli people and the nation of Israel after 1948 Golda Meir focused on the future of her country. One of her primary goals was to see her nation established as a legitimate nation and to see its security and sovereignty retained. In spite of overwhelming odds as the Arab nations around her attacked and sought Israel's destruction, Golda Meir refused to give in to the pressure to retaliate indiscriminately. Perhaps the best example of this was during the buildup to the Yom Kippur War. Her advisors and military strategists made it clear that the surrounding Arab nations were massing for an imminent invasion of Israel. In spite of the fact that Israel would have been justified in making a preemptive strike, Golda Meir refused to be seen as the aggressor in this dispute. She insisted on this position because she realized that without American support, Israel would not be able to retain its sovereignty. Her choice was vindicated when, after the Arab nations struck first, the United States announced its support of Israel and helped them with economic and military aid.
