Vicksburg was the key to completing the Union's Anaconda Plan. In a battle plan named after the world's largest constricting snake the idea was for the Union to blockade all southern ports on the Atlantic, control the entire Mississippi River through New Orleans and then to cut the south in half using a massive army. All of these things eventually came to pass but the one obstacle to the plan were the Confederate guns overlooking the Mississippi from the bluffs near Vicksburg.
Any union vessel moving up or down the river was an easy target for these pre-sighted weapons and the southern gunners routinely blasted steamboats, barges and even Union ironclads when they attempted to run the guns.
Vicksburg became one of the centers of 'modern war' along with Petersburg. Both Confederate cities felt the brunt of Union sieges as the war raged on.
At Vicksburg, General Grant was so desperate for control of the river that he entertained all sorts of hair brained ideas suggested to aid the conquest of the city.
