The first strategy the North employed was a direct march to Richmond in order to capture the Confederate capital and end the war. In July the First Battle of Bull Run was fought, the South won and the Union army retreated to Washington. Both sides realize that a quick war is not going to be possible and the Union begins to think of a long-term strategy for defeating the South.
