Assigning Social Change

Prior to discussing the particular differences between premodern, modern & postmodern periods in society & the subsequent history that comes along with it, it is of vital importance to understand what happens when a change or shift occurs. From this perspective we are looking at the prevalent way of life & thinking in a culture or society, a grouping of complex social networks & structures dynamic due to its social factor. While change is a constant, minor changes occur every day with little impact not far reaching enough at its infancy but when adopted by others in practice brings about a bigger change, creating a shift of the way things are. For example, in Wales in the 17th century, Guilds were not the norm. Farmers, blacksmiths, potters, specialised labourers were on their own although each village had a loose confederation of similar-specialisation traders. When the idea of guilds were adapted from England, they thrived being that through them trade with members of the guild as well as level of specialisation rose & intensified empowering the members & the guild itself allowing for far more superior products where production is not limited by the capacity of one specialist. This brought about social change in villages & the way specialist-labours are done with guilds opening up shops in English cities that eventually ushered the Industrial revolution. In villages, while specialisation is maintained, specialists belonged to guilds where they get training and can vouch for their level of skills, hence the saying, "The is qualified." professionalism arose from this idea of being certified by peer according to a set number of qualities & skills for a particular profession ushering a social change in the way jobs, specialisation & careers were viewed.
