The racial discrimination against Mexicans during 1850s and 1860s was manifested by passing discriminatory law and extortion. One way of discrimination was through manipulation. As a result of new land laws created by the US congress in 1851 ranchos lost their lands. Again during the period of gold rush, the squatters occupied the lands of Mexicans.
