Part 1- Introduction: Private Security Services

Private Security Services are hired to protect property, assets and people. In the Middle Ages, watchmen performed these services to clients for a fee. In extreme cases watchmen organize & train themselves for war to protect their master's interests evolving into organized armed groups of mercenaries for a fee. The 'real' Pirates of the Caribbean started out this way, having been 'hired' by the British Governor of Port Royal to terrorize their enemies & protect their territories. The most visible private security personnel we interact with everyday are the uniformed security guards controlling or looking after the access areas in buildings & offices, schools, warehouses- just about any property or interest of value. Body guards on the other hand provide personal security detail to individuals who need protection. Their private connotation means that they are hired for a fee. The common classification of security personnel are the following:

1. In-House or Proprietary Security - they usually guard/protect theme parks, casinos, malls;
2. they do not have the power to arrest (only in extreme cases using the power of 'citizen's arrest). Their prime duties are to observe, detect, deter & report.

3. Private Patrol & Contract Security - much alike the first but they are responsible for various locations.

4. Security Police - unlike the first two, security police officers are given 'Policing Powers to act as an agent of the client/owner' within a jurisdiction. For example, 'University Campus Police' are responsible for the maintaining peace & order within the university & within the bounds of the campus & they have the power to ...
