Ivan IV, called Ivan the Terrible began his reign at age 14. Ivan was a very smart person, but he had a tough beginning to his life. His father died when he was only three, his mother died when he was seven, and he was raised in an abusive and disturbing environment where he learned the human life is basically disposable. Since he was so mistreated, he hated the upper class with great contempt and instead took a liking to the merchant class who happened to be who the upper class despised. "At a very early age he entertained an exalted idea of his own divine authority, and his studies were largely devoted to searching the Scriptures and the Slavonic chronicles for sanctions and precedents for the exercise and development of his right divine" (NNBD). Despite his early years, he was also a very spiritual and religious person.
