Conspiracy theories are those ideas and theories put together by people to attempt to explain an event or a situation as a result of a plot by a covert group or an organization, secret plots that serve to 'cover up' the what really happened, basically the true reasons behind an event. Or, in a more general sense, conspiracy theorists believe that certain social, political and economic situations or outcomes in society happen because of secret plots unknown to the public, done so in order for the more powerful groups to covertly control society or to push an agenda for their own benefit. This discussion is going to focus on the rise of conspiracy theories, the reasons behind them, particularly focusing on the events in the '60's when, according to McIver (2004), an important development pushed for conspiracy theories to surface and become popular as an alternative explanation for events.
