For example, the Chinese Cultural Revolution occurred between October 1966 and October 1976. In addition, it was launched and enforced by Mao Zedong, China's leader from 1949 to 1976. In the early 1960s, Mao and Jiang Qing began to criticize intellectualism in the early 1960s. The revolution officially started in 1966 when Mao and Jiang organized students called "Red Guards" and used them to spread their ideology and theory on Socialism around the country. Consequently, anyone that was against this ideology and of the social reconstruction process was terrorized and severely punished.
