World War II, in fact, had helped the economy recover. The giant growth of industry built to win WWII was available to convert to peace time consumer goods, from kitchen appliances to automobiles. Similar to the situation after World War I, America emerged from the Second World War with a strong economy. Under Roosevelt and his successors, much of the U.S. economy, while not taken over outright by the government, became subject to massive regulations, which protected the existing companies in particular industries during the war. This giant growth of industry built to win WWII was available to convert to peace time consumer goods, from kitchen appliances to automobiles. When there was no more need for war materials, we saw the plants switch back to making things for consumers rather than the military services.

Indeed, during WWII, a huge demand had been built up for goods that were not available. For example, after not being able to buy things that were unavailable during the war, people began spending large sums of money, including a demand for new homes, furniture for the homes, rugs and appliances, to name a few. This boom lasted for over 30 years, with manufacture and selling of goods was enormous. The American economy was riding high, with most people working and making good money.
