?Facebook first started in Harvard University as an online version of 'Hot or Not' according to the Harvard Crimson (Wikipedia, 2011) where users were asked to compare two photos and choose which one was 'hotter'.
?This was called Facemash started my Mark Zuckerberg who was a sophomore at Harvard at the time. In order to create a database of pictures for comparison on Facemash - the predecessor to Facebook, he hacked into Harvard's protected network and "copied the houses' private dormitory ID images" (Wikipedia, 2011).
?This was an instant success. Within the first hour the site went online, it attracted 450 visitors. An enthusiastic computer programmer, Zuckerberg had already developed a number of social-networking websites for fellow students, including Coursematch, which allowed users to view people taking their degree, and Facemash, where you could rate people's attractiveness.
?Within a few days, the Harvard administration shut it down and charged but ultimately dropped Zuckerberg with "breach of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy, and faced expulsion". (Wikipedia, 2011)
?Inspired by this, he quickly went to work on 'thefacebook' with financial help from his friend Eduardo Saverin (Yadav, 2006) and its popularity spread in Harvard quickly. Originally permitted to only Harvard students, it soon expanded to include Yale, and Stanford with the same amount of success.
