Organization Review: The American Indian Movement (AIM)
The American Indian Movement (AIM) is one of the leading advocacy groups in the U.S. and North America. Founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, it had its roots in the 50's when American Indian nations across the U.S. were experiencing widespread issues of police harassment and reported racism as a direct enforcement of the Indian Termination Policies first instituted in the 30's. In the early years, AIM's focus was to address issues on treaty, spirituality, sovereignty, leadership and spirituality. In Minneapolis, the issues faced by large communities of Native Americans (which was referred to by the locals as 'red ghettos') was made much worse by high unemployment, racial discrimination, police neglect and harassment, poverty, substandard housing, drug abuse and domestic violence. Thus, Aim's initial program was aimed at economic empowerment and independence for Native Americans as they feel that only through this will the problems faced by Native Americans ebb.
