As a therapist, it takes time to let the patient find their voice. A lot of this is just by listening and taking cues from their answers. During the period of first getting to know the patient, there is no room for making judgment or even trying to give them advice. They need to find their own guide and the therapist assists them as they work through these steps. The strategies most likely used will be cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications. The combination is a healthy way to approach the problem. The counselor will meet with the patient for up to 6 months or longer depending on the severity of the symptoms. Medications used are often now Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). They make the patient feel better along with CBT (www.ptsd.va.gov).

Facing reality and finding out what best helps the person to cope is healthy. The therapist appears to ask the same questions but in a variety of ways to hear how the client deals with the situation. The symptoms have both cognitive and affective stimuli and the patient has to work through both areas to be able to function. He is very aware of a problem such as that loud noises are reminiscent of gun fire from the war but on the affective scale has much more trouble controlling the stimuli that comes from the sound.
