The beginning of innovations in nursing science began during the Crimean War wherein Florence Nightingale was able to immensely improve nursing through the recognition of environmental impacts on nursing. Therefore, she is considered the founder of the science of nursing as she was instrumental in helping to stem and prevent the spread of infection that plagued nursing prior to her scientific improvements.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs 1943
Nursing was further improved during the application of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, which was predicated upon a system that formulated how humans ensured their survival through the most basic levels such as the need to survive. Therefore, nursing incorporated the necessity to survive by improving upon the standards of care as the it has evolved overtime, yet it is a continuously improving paradigm as hundreds of thousands of patients still die each year from preventable issues associated with nursing.
