Kristen M. Swanson Theory of Caring
Introduction: Introduces the theory, purpose of the paper, and provides rationale for selecting the theory.
Dr. Kristen Swanson's theory of caring is a timely theory in today's healthcare arena.
Patients and clients are not looking for advanced technology as much as they are looking for a
place that they know people care for them. Once they feel they are important to an organization,
they keep coming back. Swanson's theory has been used extensively in many organizations and
has been shown to have a positive impact on patient outcomes. This model is one that can be
used in any organization without disrupting the current nursing process. This is why I want to
study and put these principles in place in my unit as a pilot and progress to the organization to
implement a caring model for patient support (Tonges & Ray, 2011).

Description of theory: Include four subtopics regarding selected theory's Purpose, Concepts and Definitions, Relationships and Structure, and Assumptions.

Kristen Swanson's theory is considered a middle range theory. It is used extensively in
research and practice and as a support for many research articles. A middle range theory is one
that has been extensively tested and can be used to make predictions about a natural
phenomenon. Dr. Swanson's theory has been used in a total of over 120 studies and many which
have been analyzed further in application of the studies (Andershed & Olsson, 2009). The
Swanson Caring Theory attempts to determine if the caregiver has the capacity to care and what
level that concern can be predicted.
Swanson's background is in the perinatal setting but the model is adaptable to any
clinical setting. These beliefs are important to the model. The first is to believe that others have
meaningful lives. The next is to understand that there is meaning in the lives of others. Swanson
strives to show that a caregiver should be emotionally present to others instead of just walking
through our job with attachment. Doing it to be able to do for others if they could do it for
themselves and lastly, the assisting others to care for themselves (Tonges, M. & Ray, J. (2011).
According to her model there are five levels or hierarchies of caring. The first level is the
capacity for caring. In many cases it is important first to know if the staff has the capability to
care at a level that is sincere. Many providers will attempt to show that care but often it is a fake
concern and patients can see through this façade easily. The real caring person is well-known
both to staff and patient.
