How does a peptic ulcer develop?

There are a number of reasons that people develop stomach ulcers. The biggest culprit is the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This bacterium lives in the mucosa of the stomach lining and when there is a constant erosion of the lining, the bacterium becomes active. The bacterium can live in the body from childhood but may not become active until one is elderly or the body is under stress.
