One of the biggest vulnerable populations in the United States is the homeless. According to deChesney and Anderson (2012), approximately 3 million Americans experience homelessness each year. This number is expected to increase due to a number of factors. It is also difficult to get true numbers of homeless individuals due to their life style and the inability to get a true count. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless (2010), people become homeless due to inability to maintain their mortgage, mental illness, domestic violence, inability to pay their bills, especially medical and the personal choice to be homeless. Due to the multiplicity of needs of this vulnerable population, communities have a responsibility to provide services to these people to give them as manageable quality of life as they can sustain. As providers of health, it is important that the health providers assess the numbers of homeless people and their immediate needs.

Explanation of why this population is classified as vulnerable

The typical homeless person usually has been living on the streets for some time. They are male and have suffered from some type of mental illness and have been shunned by their family and friends. Some homeless people choose this as a way of life. Other newly homeless people do not fit into this category. They may have recently lost their job and apply for services to support their self and family. They may know someone they can temporarily have housing with for a short period. Some cities have shelters for single individuals and families depending on their situation. As healthcare suppliers, it is important to know these resources to advise people who become homeless. Among people who find themselves homeless, the education level is not past high school graduate or GED which was 72%.
