Quarantine is a compulsory isolation that applies to those who have been exposed to contagious disease but who have not become ill from it. Isolation applies to the people who have the contagious disease. Quarantine is used to separate and restrict the movements of well people who may have been exposed to the communicable disease to see if they get sick. The people who are quarantined may have been exposed to a communicable disease and may not know it or that may have the disease but do not show any symptoms. Quarantine can help limit the spread of communicable disease. Unlike quarantine isolation normally is voluntary. It is used to separate people who are sick with a communicable disease from those who are healthy. Isolation restricts the movement of the ill person to stop the spread of certain diseases. For example, hospitals may isolate patients with certain forms of Tuberculosis. Isolation generally lasts for the period of the communicability of disease. Isolation tend to occur in the infected person's home or a medical facility or hospital near the person's home. The infected person would have his/her own room and the people who would care for them would wear protective clothing and take other precautions.
