What are the long term and short term effects of this disease?

The long-term effects of this disease are that it results in chronic constipation, which affects the overall health of women that suffer from IBS with constipation as the major symptom. The constipation affects health in different ways as different people respond differently with some experiencing depression while others are lethargic and bloated. The short-term effects are a lower quality of life in regard to activities and other issues related to constipation that prevents a person from fully enjoying their lives.

How does the medication ease the symptoms of this disease?

In regard to easing the symptoms associated with constipation, the disease IBS with constipation as the major symptom is caused when the serotonin 5-HT4 receptor, which is a receptor in the human body responsible for preventing contractions when serotonin binds to it, binds to the intestines that are in the colon. Tegaserod blocks the 5-HT4 receptor and prevents serotonin from binding to it, which enables contractions to increase in the intestines allowing for more frequent bowel movements.
