As you briefly explore the speaker in the poem (not the poet) by studying the language the speaker uses and his or her apparent moods and motivations, I feel like the speaker is a child of a war or even a Holocaust victim. I initially thought the speaker was perhaps an aborted child because of the knife references, but I think that the Holocaust victim is a better hypothesis. What do you think?
The speaker's language is not that of an infant or fetus, so I assume that he or she is a young child or preteen as the speaker says, "My mother held me by my hand. Then someone raised the knife of parting: So that it should not strike me, My mother loosed her hand ...
