As you briefly compare the two, I feel like Deresiewicz's essay clearly reiterates how we must know ourselves and make peace with ourselves because "Solitude isn't easy, and isn't for everyone." There is an emphasis on the Self in this piece since "One can only save oneself -- and whatever else happens, one can still always do that. But it takes a willingness to be unpopular." Tolle also relates to some of these notions as he encourages, "The most important, the primordial relationship in your life is your relationship with the Now, or rather with whatever form the Now takes, that is to say, what is or what happens
