As you compare the two girls, I see Elizabeth as more of the Beyonce "independent woman" as she asserts herself more. Elizabeth is a bit overly confident at first and too judgmental, but she eventually changes and allows herself to become a bit more reflective as the novel advances.

She is also able to negotiate between her personal desires as a woman and still adhere to social conventions as a woman. Her realization indicates her ability to self analyze as she suggests, "I who have prided myself on my discernment. I, who have valued myself on my abilities! Who have often disdained the generous candour of my sister, and gratified my vanity, in useless or blameable distrust." How humiliating is this discovery. Yet how just a humiliation. . . . I have courted prepossession and ignorance, and driven reason away, where either were concerned. Till this moment I never knew myself" (171).

I also see Elizabeth as embodying more feminist ideals as she seeks a man not just because of social norms and societal expectations but someone who will appreciate and not try to change her. Elizabeth's fierce independence is noted. Her rejection ...
