How might copyright law and fair use affect the use of technology in the classroom?
Copyright is defined as "a means for of protection for literary works, movies, musical works, sound recordings, paintings, photographs, software, live performances, and television or sound broadcasts materials" (Head). And since there are literally millions of these works out there for educational purposes, it would be impossible for educators physically and financially to have to buy licenses for every single resource that they need. In response, "in 1976, the Copyright Act was enforced. The act emphasized the right of 'fair use' for reasons such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research that are not an infringement of copyright" (Head). This means that now, teachers are allowed to use copyrighted information but only if they follow fair use guidelines and they follow the rules and not use the material for financial gain or as their own original material. This includes works found on the Internet and through other technology means. "Another copyright law that affects teachers and students is the public domain. The public domain has to do with materials that are either ineligible for copyright protection or expired copyrights. If either of these factors applies, the information is fair use for teachers and students"(Head).
