AGES 5-7 years old

COOKING
When your child has lots of "excess energy" mix up a batch of these cookies. The more you pound them, knead them, and handle them, the better the final product.

You'll need:
? 3 cups oatmeal ? 1 1/2 cups brown sugar ? 1 1/2 cups flour ? 1 1/2 cups butter ? 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder ? large bowl ? measuring cups and spoons ? cookie sheet ? mixing spoon ? hot pads ? spatula

What to do:
Gather ingredients with your child. Look at the letters and numbers on the package labels and talk about textures and smells.
Invite your child to measure and mix ingredients in the large bowl.
Encourage him to roll, knead, pound and get rid of his excess energy.
Demonstrate how he can roll the dough into small balls and place them on the cookie sheet.
Assist him in putting the cookie sheet into a 350 degree oven and bake for 10 - 12 min.
Carefully remove the cookies.
Relax and enjoy this snack together.
How to play:
Not only is your child getting rid of all that excess energy but cooking activities are an excellent way to put math and science skills into practice.
