Different states and districts have different laws and mandates regarding ELLs. I live and teach in California. Here we have the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) that is administered to students within 30 days of enrolling in a public school and then once per year between July 1st and October 31st if they have been identified as an ELL. There are different grade spans for this test for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Each grade span includes content tailored to the appropriate grade levels and aligned with the ELD standards.
