Why should one attend college?
We have many reasons for and against attending college. During a time when it has become more of a monetary concern than simply a middle class rite of passage, it is best to go to college for a specific skills based degree. Humanities seem less important these days, as Art and Poetry do not and often cannot support an individual alone in today's culture.
If you are a person who has a strong sense of loving knowledge, then regardless of your interest, if you can afford it, college will help you.
If your future job requires the kind of analytical thinking you (hopefully) learn in college, then college is for you
If you want to become a Doctor, Lawyer, Dentist, CPA, Nurse, any kind of job that requires specific training offered in college, then you should go. Any job that requires you to become licensed needs a college degree or 2.
If you want to enter the trades: plumbing, carpentry, or building, you may not need college, but if you wish to become an architect, you need to go to college.
We are having a huge shift in higher education. More and more students who would like to become teachers cannot find jobs. Too many people went for masters and PhDs in the 90s when the dot com boom went bust. Now, education seems like something one can either do on their own, or decide if what they really want to do involves having a college degree. Many jobs do not, but the way that colleges and the loans are thrust upon us, it makes people believe that they must get more skills to keep up. Sadly this is all about education ceasing to be about learning, but more about schools, colleges, and Universities deciding to run themselves as businesses for profit and prestige. Profit being the newer aspect of higher education.
