Depth and breadth of a Project Manager's IT Skills

Most will agree with the notion that Project Managers should have sufficient IT knowledge/skills. But how deep or current should this knowledge be? Is it necessary that they stay current across a number of technical fields or can they simply apply generic PM skills whilst picking up only essential domain knowledge/expertise relevant to the projects being implemented?
