Cations and anions lab

This is a lab report that centers around the reaction between cations and anions. The resulting precipitate is indicative of the reaction that occurred. In our lab a lead nitrate solution, Pb(NO3)2 will be mixed with a solution of potassium chromate, K2CrO4, a yellow precipitate will forms.

Though I have completed this lab, I am told that what I have is not sufficient and I know this is correct. Because I am not knowledgeable of the subject matter, I am not able to go into a great deal of detail. Out of of seven weeks of work, I have passed three labs with relatively good grades the rest have been 0-50 percent. I need help in bolstering the various sections of the lab.

Solution Summary

Without writing the entire lab report for the student (which we are not supposed to do), this solution points out the mistakes and shows some specimen reports to follow.

I have taken a look at your attachment. Following are the suggestions that I want to offer:

a. This is a double displacement reaction. You have to mention that.
b. What is liquid precipitate? Just say yellow precipitate.
c. You have shown a half-reaction, but not the overall balanced chemical reaction.
d. Theoretical yield is 100 gm, not 100 ml

CATIONS AND ANION LAB

Introduction

The purpose of this week's lab is to learn to demonstrate a double-displacement reaction of ionic compounds. To accomplish this, two ionic compounds will be mixed together and the product will precipitate out of solution. In this procedure, the product must be precipitated out of the solution and then weighed.

For this lab, lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and potassium chromate (K2CrO4) ...

  • "Thankyou for the feedback. I have a few question though; With the first statistic about cost below... “According to Sigma-Aldrich catalog, cost of 1L octane is AUD $ 392.00, whereas the cost of 1L ethanol is AUD $196.00. Moreover, if ethanol is obtained from sugar industry as a by-product, it may cost even less. Source of oxygen is ambient atmosphere, so it costs nothing. So ethanol is much cheaper than petrol, in fact it is half-priced: AUD $ (392-196) = $ 196.” I didn't think it made sense because the cost of petrol per litre is normally a dollar something or even less than a dollar not a couple of hundred of dollars. For example, a statistic that I found in america was: "U.S. ethanol production costs are about $1.20 per gallon of ethanol, or $1.82 per gallon on a gasoline-equivalent basis." However, I was wondering whether you could find an Australian statistic. Also, you mentioned that H20 is not a greenhouse gas. However, in the combustion equations it is actually carbon dioxide and water vapour which are produced and they are both greenhouse gases. Finally, how do I calculate the energy efficiency of ethanol and petrol? "
  • "Thank you!"
  • "Didnt really answer my questions but gave me a start at least."
  • "Once again this is tremendous help I can't thank you enough for not only working the problem but explaining in detail how and why!! KR"
  • "Awesome thank you so much for the help!!!"
