If we assume that the chemical reaction between the 2 chemistries can occur, can we in fact write that C7H8O2 (hydroxymethyl phenol) + C2H4O (polyethylene glycol) = C9H12O3 ---- which would be 3 Phenoxy-1,2-propane diol? Can this reaction be a possibility? And what exactly is a diol?

1) If it can, what would the chemical structure of the new derivative polymer look like?

2) If you think the reaction doesn't and can't occur, what do you think the reaction is (if any) between these 2 chemistries?

The presumption is that the reaction is occurring in an aqueous matrix and under some elevated temperature.
