a) Figure 1 (overleaf) shows the abbreviated structural formulae of two carbon compounds (labelled A and B) and the reaction (Reaction 1) between them. The Equation for this reaction is incomplete; only the reactants are shown, and the missing product (s) is indicated by a question mark (?)
i) Identify three functional groups (not including the benzene ring) in compounds A and B by circling them and naming them clearly on Figure 1.
ii) Complete the equation for reaction 1 by drawing the abbreviated structural formula (e) of the product (s) of this reaction (in place of the question mark) on figure 1. Identify any new functional groups in organic product (s) by circling the, and naming them clearly.
iii) State the type of reaction that has occurred, explaining (in a single sentence) how you have arrived at your answer.
iv) State the type of reaction represented by the reverse of reaction 1, and outline its importance in biological systems, (two or three short sentences.)
b) This part of the question is concerned with the polymer made by polymerization of compound A.
i) Draw out the structure of this polymer and identify the monomer unit.
Your drawing should include three monomer units.
ii) Identify the new functional group in this polymer by circling it and naming it clearly on your drawing
i) Compound C reacts with bromine, Br2, Write a chemical equation for this reaction. The Equation should show clearly the difference between the structure of the reactant (compound C ) and the structure of the product.
ii) Write a sentence that describes and names the type of reaction between compound C and bromine.
