Chapter 10: Supply Chain Management Strategy and Design Summary

Supply Chains:

Supply chains involves all activities, functions and facilities that are involved with the transformation and flow of goods and services from point of originality (raw materials) (Upstream) to the end user customer (downstream). This also involves the associated information flows along the chain of supply. Information flow is the heart and brains of the supply chain. Supply chain is therefore an integrated group of processes that procures raw materials, produce the products and distribute the products and services to the end customers.

Supply chain for Service providers

Unlike a manufacturers supply chain, a supply chain for services are often more difficult to define since the customer doesn't usually receive a physical product. The supply chain for service rather than focusing on flow of goods focuses more on the human resources and the support services that are required to deliver services effectively. It is also more compact and less extended with very few tiers of suppliers and a smaller or nonexistent distribution network. Service oriented companies often have quality management issues throughout their supply chain as customers serve as valuable components of the service delivery.

Value Chains:

Value chains and demand chains are part of the supply chain. Value chain refers to every step in the delivery of maximum value to end user customers from raw materials to end user. Demand chain on the other hand is the increase in value for any part or all of the chain. These terms are often used interchangeably with supply chain. In order to achieve value for customers in the supply chain, it is important that members of the supply chain act as partners systematically to create value at each stage of the supply chain.

Supply Chain Management (SCM):

SCM involves integrating and managing the flow of goods and services and information through the supply chain in order to make it more responsive to customer's needs while lowering costs. Therefore the keys to effective supply management are rapid flow of information, close collaboration, communication, cooperation and trust among members.
