The hip, knee and ankle joints are involved in running. The leg action in running begins with the start and acceleration of the body. The weight of the body is evenly distributed on both feet, and then the lead foot goes forward, with the athlete pushing himself away from the ground with the ball of his foot. The leg action takes place in a sagittal plane about a front axis. The femur and pelvic girdle form a ball and socket joint. The femur (distal end) and tibia form a hinge joint. The tibia (distal end) and calcaneus form a modified joint. When the foot is in contact with the ground the hip and knee are extended. This involves the gluteus maximus and gluteus minimus, and hamstrings (biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus), and the quadriceps group of muscles (rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedialis). The ankle joint is flexed, involving the gastrocnemius.
