Reclamation of Industrial Wasteland

Ask Custom Question

I am trying to put together a feasibility study that evaluates the reclamation suitability of the industrial wasteland on the south side of Chicago (the U.S. Steel property to be specific). Reclamation suitability needs to be addressed, which should be done in two steps, the first step would be to exclude those unsuitable wasteland by the limits conditions, while the second step needs to evaluate the suitability degree of the identified suitable wasteland. From the perspectives of soil fertility, soil pollution, farmland water conservancy and land damage, twelve evaluation factors need to include soil depth, gravel content, bulk density, organic material content, pollution index, gradient, flatness, irrigation and drainage condition, source of borrowed earth, distance from the residential settlement, erosion modulus and damage extent, which will establish an index system for evaluating the abandoned industrial land, aiming to provide references for the future reclamation of the U.S. Steel abandoned property.

I would also like to include current governmental incentives available to large projects that involve reclaiming industrial wasteland, while specifically focusing on the U.S. Steel abandoned property.

Suitability of Industrial Wasteland for Reclamation

Purpose

The industrial wasteland should be evaluated before being reclaimed into agricultural farmlands to find out which factors prevent reclamation of wasteland and to exclude those wastelands that are not suitable to be reclaimed. Those wastelands which can be reclaimed are evaluated on the basis of quality standards which help in determining their suitability.

When rejecting wastelands for reclamation, different factors like soil texture, pollution, surface ground, damage conditions, etc. are taken into consideration. From the wastelands which are suitable to be reclaimed, screening is done by limits method and then these are evaluated on the basis of several factors including technical factors. An index is created to calculated suitability degree so that there is a reference on the basis of which abandoned wastelands can be further evaluated.

Evaluation Index System

The evaluation index system consists of twelve index factors, all of which have to be evaluated for final reclamation. These are as follows (Zang, BAI, 2013):

1. Soil Depth: Soil depth is an important factor for evaluation of reclamation. Soil layer and loose soil are indicators of soil capacity to support growth of roots of plants and amount of water and nutrients in underground root. More the depth of covering soil, more would be the growth of vegetation.

2. Gravel content: Different sites of land have different gravel content due to difference in soil layer. If the gravel ...
