Shane Underwood is 16 years old. He drives an old Ford pickup truck. He won't be seen in public without his cowboy boots. He hangs around all the time with a group of people who have formed a Dixie Chicks (a popular country music group) fan club. He has gone to church every Sunday since he was born. As soon as he was old enough, his parents stopped making him go, but he still enjoys it. He is a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization, and won three local prizes last year. His parents would like him to join the Honor Society (his grades are good enough), but he thinks its members are nerds. His girlfriend is a cheerleader. He feels uncomfortable around her friends even though he tries to fit in.He does not succeed in his efforts.
