For all the definitions of public relations, the root of the reason for that type of business being in existence comes down to profits. Truth is, most everything about business comes down to profits, and that's why we like capitalism in this country. Profits are spurred by the successful sale of the company products, and when considered on a national or global scale, the services of some aspects of public relations are necessary to marketing efforts.

A local business in a limited market may be able to rely on word-of-mouth advertising and in fact, there are many types of companies who use that methodology. Examples include doctors, accountants, engineers, specialty shops, and local other products (fresh fish at the coast, for example), but once demand begins to spread out geographically, some of the functions of a PR firm should be considered.
