In any form of teaching it is common to find cases where students were taught something and found that many of them were left astonished or overwhelmed at something which was quite basic. This results when there is a clash of learning styles. Different individuals have preferential ways of taking information and processing it which we call learning styles. Hence learning style can be defined in multiple ways depending on individual's perspective. One definition of learning style is:

"Learning style is the manner in which individuals perceive and process information in learning situations" (Brown, 2000).

Some students can be visual learners, while others could be auditory, kinesthetic learners or combination of all three. When information is presented to them in their preferred learning style, they are most likely to learn in best way.

Visual: Visual learners learn best in pictures. They sometimes take clue from instructor's non-verbal cues such as body language to help with understanding. They like to sit on front benches and take lot of notes.
Auditory: Such learners discover information through listening and interpreting information by catching pitch and speed of instructor's voice. These individuals gain knowledge by reading out loud in the class.
Kinesthetic: These individuals prefer to learn through hands-on approach. They favor interaction with the physical world. As a result kinesthetic learners can get distracted easily and lag behind.

The article relates different types of learning styles with theories to understand why there are differences in learner's ability to take information in different forms. Specifically mentioned in the article is the study performed on Iranian student's learning styles.
